Mendoza Argentina landscape scene at el Leoncito National Park

From everything I’ve read and tasted, Mendoza, Argentina is a quaint capital, desert oasis in Mendoza Province, by Wine Folly.  I’ve not been there, but would drop everything if an opportunity were to come up. It’s located from the peaks of the Andes mountains, and goes down into the valleys and river basin. Can you imagine standing at the foot of the mountains and looking upward? I can certainly appreciate what I’ve learned about this winery, because it’s not a commodity brand. It’s a wine for those special moments in life.

Alta Vista is a relatively new winery In life and legacy, but not in its presence in the world. It’s existed since 1998, and was then founded by Patrick D’Aulan. He was born into French heritage, which has been traced back to thirteenth century of French and English nobility.

Just off the cuff, I want to let you know that I use Wikipedia as a resource, so you’ll find reference here, because today I know it’s credible. I’m paying for the privileged, because the best today is not free and Wiki is for real.

Early History

The D’Aulan family has owned Piper-Heidsieck Champagne house for the last 150 years, until 1998, and that’s when Alta Vista was founded. That is roughly 1.3 million bottles of wine, which are produced every year, and are distributed globally, to over 36 countries. They are a key player in Blanc de Blanc wines, with many very special wines. It’s also rated among the top five sparkling wineries in Argentina, in 2009.

Climate Is Paramount

Mendoza’s climate has only proved to assist in this success, making the region of the world’s most special wine-producing regions. Blanc de Blanc translates from French as “White on White” Chardonnay, using white grapes to make that wine. I love the pale yellow color, with its green reflections across the surface, and it’s higher, natural acidity. This wine is so refreshing for any occasion.

I’ve noticed that Blanc de Blanc wine grapes come from chalky soils, which brings out those mineral flavor. This characteristic creates a wonderfully toasted flavor of a French Pastry, like a croissant, with that soft, fluffy texture that many of us find so delicious! I like to thing about it as brioche, almond, and creamy character, while remaining totally refreshing. It pairs well with creamy gouda, toasted Marcona almonds, and fresh strawberries.

Terroir Defines Key Notes

Alta Vista’s Blanc de Blancs are 100 percent Chardonnay, from Mendoza’s Albaneve Estate, known for fresh, vibrant, and an elegant profile. Terroir’s key notes include white fruit, such as peach, pineapple, green apple, and lemon zest (above). Still, this also includes white florals, herbs, subtle brioche, and almond nuances, which become more pronounced with age. White fruit flavors are central to the identity of blanc de blancs sparkling wines.

Terroir Emphasized

The winery emphasized Terroir expression, understanding how soil, climate, and altitude shape a wine’s identity, and pioneered the single-vineyard concept in Argentina by isolating and showcasing micro-regions rather than blending them into uniform profiles.
