Wine Grape Varietal Leaves can all be found in resource books, but I wanted my own images. There are many wineries where I’ve worked, prior to becoming a consultant. At each one I learned a different segment of the wine business. While at Kendall-Jackson, I took advantage of Santa Rosa Junior College’s Demonstration Vineyard; which in all fairness was planted pre-K-J, when the facility was Chateau DeBaun.
What’s interesting to note (I picked this up in my viticulture course), red grapes have a more “maple leaf” shape with notches being very evident. White wine grape leaves are more rounded.
For the most part, you’ll notice this to be true. The leaves follow in alphabetical order, with the name of the cultivar under the leaf. Enjoy!

Which leaves would one choose for great dolmadis ? Would there be a discern able difference
Great question, Jerry. First, I’d want to know that the leaves at least come from a sustainable, organic, or biodynamic vineyard… Why eat anything that’s been sprayed with who knows what (herbicides, fungicides, or synthetic fertilizers), if you can avoid all of that. Petite Sirah leaves can be pretty big.
As for flavor, I haven’t eaten any of these leaves, so I can’t tell you about the flavors; but now I’m really curious.
Enjoyed the article immensely. there are also huge variations amongst clones of the same varietal. Size matters even among the various grape varietals and their clones. Lot of fun even though many consider it trivial. Better even when paired with a glass of your favorite vino!
