Once again, the Petite Sirah Symposium is being sponsored by Concannon Vineyard, of Livermore, California, on Tuesday, July 31, 2012, 8:30 a.m.
The best and brightest Petite Sirah talent in California is again gathering to discuss Petite Sirah grape growing, wine making, and marketing issues as they continue to share their enthusiasm for this stealth variety of consequence.
Since PS I Love You began after the first Petite Sirah Symposium, interest for Petite Sirah has grown substantially. In the past 10 years, the number of Petite Sirah producers and growers has grown from 62 in 2002 to over 1,000 in 2012. Anyone who has attended the symposium understands the correlation between what was the case 10 years ago, to what is the story today.
Petite Sirah is truly an artisan winemakers “Pet” project, with most of these wines being sold directly through tasting room sales and wine clubs. Most wine critics are not seeing these wines for critical review. However, the media tasting that follows the morning session of the Symposium will provide a rare view of what many of these wineries are doing.
This year Concannon is reflecting on having grown this heritage variety for 100 years
Jim Concannon had the foresight to varietally label Petite Sirah in 1964, with a 1961 vintage, marking last year as Petite Sirah’s Golden Anniversary. “Concannon is the best location for the Petite Sirah Symposium,” states Jo Diaz, founding Executive Director of PS I Love You, Inc. “Petite Sirah is Concannon’s flagship wine; couple that with the fact that Concannon’s commitment to sponsoring the Petite Sirah Symposium has kept it in the forefront of interest by U.S. wine reviewers for all of these years.”
