On December 10, 2010, I will be returning to Rusty Eddy’s UC Davis Extension’s class to share my views and expertise on PR for small wineries. Rusty’s background, besides being one of my PS I Love You members, is that he is the Director of Communications at Middleton Family Wines, which includes

  • Clayhouse (Paso Robles)
  • Cadaretta (Walla Walla)
  • Buried Cane (Washington State)
  • Ad Lib (Western Australia)

The course particulars:

UC Davis Extension – Continuing and Professional Education
December 10, 2010
9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
DaVinci building ~ Rooms 25/29
Sign-up: Enrollment PDF

Cost: $190.00 (the course, materials, and lunch included)

Come learn what PR is, the basics for success and how to learn from new media speakers (Steve Heimoff, Jose Diaz, and myself) – all before lunch. Then, after lunch, the day continues with learning how to tell your own story with Bart Hansen, winemaker at Dane Cellars. You’ll also participate in a case study workshop, and then share those results with the class.

Rusty has been conducting this popular class for years.

This year, Rusty’s asked Steve, Jose and I to focus on the following:

“…how important (or not) it is to include social media in their PR planning. Additionally… how to figure out how best to use social media to build their brands. (My answer is that social media is just another tool, not a magic pill, but a tool which MUST be utilized.) As I’ve said before, the key to good winery PR is relationships, not how many friends you have on Facebook.

“Here’s the other thing: my focus is on building relationships, and how important that is for a small winery (business), regardless of whether or not you use social media. PR is still PR, we just need to learn how to use the new tools.”
