The Pet Heads Are Coming

On September 19, 2008, the Petite Sirah advocacy group PS I Love You, quietly celebrated its sixth anniversary. Six is a “not-very-notable-number,” as compared to 10, 25, 50, for instance. Still, in the scheme of things, as we daily plug away at all the minutia for running a 501(c)(6) organization, a lot of time has passed since Day one.

I was just struck by a recent written statement that made me react with a “What?”

Talking about Tempranillo, “The group joins other grape advocacy organizations such as ZAP (Zinfandel Advocates and Producers), Rhone Rangers (Rhone varietals) and P.S. I Love You (Petite Sirah), whose efforts have met with varying degrees of success.”

“Varying degrees of success,” without any conversations flowing between us is a request for more information.

For The Record

When we began, the growers and producers voiced at Louis Foppiano’s first Petite Sirah Symposium that the cultivar had pretty much fallen off the map with writers, and so information on Petite Sirah wasn’t reaching consumers.

Consequently, publicity (in a word) became the mission.

  • PSILY’s mission statement: “To promote, educate, and legitimize Petite Sirah as a noble variety, with a special emphasis on its terroir uniqueness.”
  • If we are to be a measure for success or failure, one only has to visit the Website and read the “Review” pages for the last six years (each year is archived, because there have been so many great stories each and every year).

Now, six years later, there’s an evolutionary shift in the making, because we’ve accomplished our original mission.

Our next step…

The Board of Directors and I have long discussed a membership level that would include consumers. Fans of PS are constantly asking, “When and where’s your next event.” PSILY hosts anything, and people come… Not in droves, because it’s not a mainstream variety, but with a passion that’s downright exciting and infectious. It reminds me of the initial Grateful Dead days, when people would go anywhere and do anything just to get into one more concert.

Couple that with the old-timers’ name for Petite Sirah, “Pet,” and you’ve got your “Pet Heads.”

Details for membership are being finalized and will be launched on the PSILY Website, once the t-shirts have arrived, later this month.

YAY! About time! The name is a little bland (though I fully recognize that PSychos is a bit edgy), but I’m glad that there’s going to be a group for us!

It’s a little easier to manage a group of “Pet Heads” than it is to manage a group of PSychos… with all due respect.

    Tie-dye versus tie-um-down…

Hum… I’m going with Tie-dye… Especially during full moon phases.
