It has been so hot on the East Coast this week! My family and I live in the mountains of western North Carolina, so we get some relief from the extreme heat and humidity, but it was still 90 degrees here for seven straight days. My point is that it’s definitely time for the chilled, refreshing wines of summer.

I tried another wine from Michigan winery, Shady Lane Cellars. This week, I tried their N/V Touche, a semi-dry blush wine that retails for $11.00. There’s abundant fruit in this yummy blush, such as strawberry and apple. It brought just the right amount of refreshment at the end of hot day.

I really do favor white wines when the temperature rises, so I hadn’t had a glass of red in a while. For this reason, I decided to try the 2006 Castano Monastrell, from Yecla, Spain. Retailing for $8.99, this wine is a steal! The nose is bursting with fruit. The wine is a beautiful, deep purple. The palate presents such fruit as plum, blueberry, raspberry, and prune. There’s leather and smoke in the finish, followed by nice, soft tannins. I’d like to try a blind tasting with this wine and others that are much more expensive. This wine is a steal at this price!
