Shopping Like it’s $19.99 with Katie

After enjoying the Happy Camper Chardonnay so much a couple of weeks ago, I decided to try the 2006 Happy Camper Merlot , which is priced the same as their other varieties at $8.99. We were invited to dinner at our friends’ house; it was to be nothing fancy, since there would be four kids under the age of eight dining with us. We were having pasta with bolognese sauce, and I brought along a bottle of the Happy Camper Merlot. We opened it while dinner was cooking (is there any other way?) and I found it to be a very nice glass of wine. There was just a bit of spice with berry and plum fruit aromas on the nose and the same flavors on the palate. The wine was very enjoyable with dinner; it strikes me as a very food-friendly wine. For the money I don’t think that I could find one that’s more versatile. The next time we’re picking up a pizza for a picnic dinner, I think I’ll bring along a bottle of this tasty Merlot.

I found my second selection of the week on sale at Earth Fare (again! Are you seeing a pattern develop here?) Earth Fare regularly has wonderful wines from all over the world on sale, and, as I’ve said here before, I love to sniff out a great value. I was picking up some ground turkey because I was making one of my favorite Rachael Ray recipes…New England Turkey Burgers. They have apple, celery and onion mixed into them and, when topped with cranberry sauce, taste just like Thanksgiving dinner. I was looking for a Chardonnay to have with dinner, and I noticed the 2006 Tilia Chardonnay on sale for $9.99, a $2.00 savings off of its regular price of $11.99. This Chardonnay is from Argentina, and it did not exhibit the heavy oak flavors that some of its California counterparts do; I found it to be really enjoyable. The nose posessed floral and citrus notes, and there was lots of fruit on the palate. I’ve got some leftover, and I’m looking forward to enjoying a glass after my kids are in bed tonight.
