Shopping Like it’s $19.99 with Katie – Killer Juice Chardonnay

My name is Katie Kelley and I am a saleaholic. I love a bargain. In my world, I’ve gotten a bargain when the value of my purchase far exceeds what I would have expected to pay for it. I will look for every opportunity to find the best value for the dollar, and will spend as much time as is necessary in order to sniff out a sale. To me, finding the perfect pair of shoes, and they’re 50% off , is cause for celebration.

Anyone who knows me will not be surprised to hear that I apply this strategy to wine selection, as well. Let me make one thing perfectly clear… Just as I do not shop for cheap shoes, I do not shop for cheap wine. I don’t like blisters on my feet and I don’t like to suffer through a really bad bottle of wine just because it was marked down. I am a woman on a mission and that mission can be summed up in one word, which is “value.” I believe that I can drink fabulous wine and still have some money left in my wallet at the end of the day.

It was this pursuit of value that brought the idea for this blog entry to mind. Every week, I will be in search of two bottles of wine (or a box, since the volume of it equals more than two bottles) that I can purchase for $19.99 or less. We are gonna party like it’s $19.99, people!

This week’s posting highlights what I think is the value-seeker’s greatest wine discovery ever…the box of wine. I bought a box of the 2005 Killer Juice Chardonnay at my local grocery store for $16.99, marked down from $24.99. For 3 liters of wine, this is the equivalent of (are you ready for this?!) $4.25 per bottle. I haven’t tasted a four dollar bottle of wine since college, but I’m sure that it didn’t taste like this. This Chardonnay is creamy and fruity at the same time. There is some oak in this wine, but I don’t find it overpowering, as I sometimes do in other California Chardonnays. The box is still currently in my refrigerator; it’s been there for two weeks. I’d like to say that I’ve cooked lots of wonderful meals that would pair perfectly with this Killer Juice, but that wouldn’t be true. The past two weeks have been very busy for my family and me. We’ve had house guests (who also enjoyed the Killer Juice, by the way), hockey practice, school holiday parties, and more hockey practice, which is always right at dinner time. Frankly, I’ve enjoyed the Killer Juice at the end of a busy day, after packaging my homemade Christmas cookies into containers for teachers, friends and neighbors (and you won’t believe the deal I got on the containers, labels, and ribbon!) when I finally get a chance to sit and relax. This box of Killer Juice has been the proverbial icing on the cake for me this holiday season. If you’re looking for a wine to please a crowd, or if you want to just pour yourself a glass at the end of the day (and the box will keep the remainder fresh for you for a very long time,) and you’re shopping for a value, I highly recommend the 2005 Killer Juice Chardonnay.
