PR 101 ~ The Importance of Good Editing ~ It’s all about the Escalade

Good editing, even I can’t get enough of it. I once worked with a colleague at a winery who was responsible for copy. She’d write a story, then it would make its way around the winery, seemingly to every single person. It seemed excessive to me at the time; however, anything that was finally approved was flawless.

Writing is a four-step process

  1. Think about the story.
  2. Write the story.
  3. Edit the story.
  4. Re-write the story.
    • And the editing continues and continues for:
      • Content
      • Style
      • Typos
      • Grammar
      • Punctuation
      • Graphic highlighting
    • Additional editing
      • Have a friend help you
      • If not, hire someone to edit for you

Editing one’s own work is extremely difficult. We read it exactly as we intended it to be, not exactly as it actually is, so mistakes do make their way though the process. I had one guy tell me once,

“I’m never going to read your blog again. You used the word ‘then’ instead of the word ‘than.'”

I have an editor, and still there can be mistakes, because I don’t have an entire office support staff to catch every single mistake. It’s exhausting. I was reminded of that this week in a Facebook rage about “Should Welfare Recipients be drug tested before receiving welfare benefits.”

Facebook Rant + Good Editing

The following was a Facebook rant that inspired the need to demonstrate the importance of good editing…

The meme reminded me of what I’ve read lately, so I thought I’d jump in. But… while the studies are conclusive that it takes millions to find a few abusers, people still want to rant and rave. Testing has turned out to be a waste of taxpayer dollars, only to catch a few people with drugs in their systems.  This one person  presented the best run-on sentence in the argument I’ve ever seen. I saw it as a great exercise to demonstrate the importance of good editing.

This is the real sentence in that debate.

What he wrote:

Like i said though I’ve been there done that been at the top and the very very bottom and i don’t watch the news or read the paper cause it’s all crap propaganda all i know or ever speak about is what i witness and deal with in everyday life first hand you’ve really got to expand outward there are numerous city’s CITY’S where almost the entire population of which is on aid that many people and your gonna tell me they have a good work ethic or morals which will hinder their abuse of the system nooo sorry people with drive and standards would find a solution to their problem but why should they nobody puts a foot in their ass and motivates them all we do is enable it I’m sorry i have no sympathy it should be hard as hell to get aid and yes test test test and show proof of where the money is going and if you own a escalade which a lot do seen it sell it buy a honda and use the balance to move somewhere that is better and has work

Edited, and let’s start with Rule #1

No sentences over 20 words, usually

Like I said, though, I’ve been there done that. I’ve been at the top and at the very very bottom. And, I don’t watch the news or read the paper. It’s all crap propaganda. All I know, or ever speak about, is what I witness and deal with in everyday life first hand.  You’ve really got to expand outward. There are numerous cities where almost the entire population is on aid. With that many people, you’re going to tell me that they have a good work ethic or morals? Their lack of a good work ethic or morals will hinder their abuse of the system. No, sorry; people with drive and standards would find a solution to their problem. But, why should they? Nobody puts a foot in their a** and motivates them. All we do is enable it. I’m sorry; I have no sympathy. It should be hard as hell to get aid. And yes, test, test, test, and show proof of where the money is going. And if you own an Escalade, which a lot do, sell it and buy a Honda.  Use the balance to move somewhere that’s better and has work.

Katie, have fun editing this one for me.
