Notice of Proposed Rulemaking in Federal Register: Petite Sirah and Durif to *finally* become synonyms

The Alcohol & Tobacco Tax & Trade Bureau (TTB) published a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on January 19, 2011 in the Federal Register, which proposes to add several new names to the regulatory list of grape variety names approved for use in designating American wines. “Among the proposals is one to recognize the names “Petite Sirah” and “Durif” as synonyms – please see page 3579.” ~ Jennifer Berry, Regulations & Rulings Division

THE MAJOR ISSUE: Any new clones purchased from UCD’s Plant Management Department from the recent past many years are labeled Durif, and that’s what NEEDS to be on your label… not Petite Sirah, for instances. Compliance is a real issue.

As the executive director of PS I Love You, I will be crafting a message for all the members to be submitting. I’ll be sending it as an attachment via Email to all the members. Saving all the members time, energy, and the original message to the TTB that brought this back to the forefront for reconsideration is my greatest concern. This isn’t the first time this has come up, and a unified effort for round two is now paramount.

TTB must receive written comments on or before March 21, 2011.

Any brand that is not a member of PS I Love You, you have an invested interest in having “Petite Sirah” and “Durif” finally becoming synonyms (and if you make a Petite Sirah, you have an invested interest). Please don’t sit on the sidelines.

You need to consider the importance of complete compliance, and getting this synonym name passed as expediently as possible is in your best interest.

I can’t stress this enough for the variety and all the brands’ sake.

They must be recognized as synonyms… I have all the proof I need – which the members of PSILY have access to, and we will help to make the cause.

Meanwhile, all other wine companies in the industry (89 members of PS I Love you ~ and 761 wine companies that produce Petite Sirah… that’s 672 of you) have an invested interest in making this happen this time around.

Read the details and get involved ASAP…
