Shopping Like its $19.99

Shopping Like it’s $19.99 with Katie – Go Pats!!!

With Superbowl Sunday fast approaching, I thought that this week I’d find two bottles that would help make the big game more enjoyable. While I do enjoy a nice cold beer while I’m watching the Patriots (Sam Adams, specifically), too many nice cold beers make me feel like a great big lump, and so wine has become a better choice for me.

In the event that you’re serving ribs, chili, or beef stew at your Superbowl get-together, I suggest that you try the 2006 Big House Red. This wine retails for $9.99, is a delicious blend of my favorite red varieties (plus a few that I hadn’t heard of…17 in all!) , and is so incredibly food friendly. The screw cap closure adds to its everyday-wine-feel. The clever name and label won’t intimidate your non-wine-drinking guests; everything about it is approachable. The icing on the cake is the fact that this wine is so beautifully crafted, your guests who do know wine will be blown away when they hear that you only spent $9.99 on this bottle. Georgetta Dane, the Big House Winemaker, says of this Big House Red, “Try to imagine blending all these varieties…maybe just like you and your friends, every single one so different but oh so great when you gather together.” Big House and the Big Game…need I say more???

If your Superbowl Sunday menu is centered around dishes like shrimp cocktail, grilled sausage, or cheese fondu, my suggestion is the 2005 Concannon Vineyard’s Chardonnay, Central Coast. Also priced at $9.99, this wine is a true everyday value. This Chardonnay displays just the right amount of oak (for my palate) and lots of fruit. This wine would complement a creamy pasta dish as well as a well-seasoned poultry dish. I tried it tonight with a chicken sausage and penna pasta bake, and it was delicious. If you’re rooting for the Pats this year, give Tom Brady’s Irish heritage a nod while enjoying a glass of this lovely Concannon Chardonnay. While we’re at it, let’s just raise our glasses to Tom Brady because he’s…well…terrific!
