Adam Richardson ~ Winemaker “Crafting Old World Wines with New World Experience,” while trotting around the globe

A native of Western Australia, Adam Richardson has been making wine professionally for more than 12 years, in both the Northern and Southern hemispheres of the world.

Think about that… This means that Adam’s worked with twice as many harvests in this time frame. He not only attends to harvest from August through October in the US, but then travels to the Southern Hemisphere and works another harvest from February through April.

This rigorous schedule has developed Adam into an extremely knowledgeable and worldly winemaker.

I had already been working with Concannon Vineyard when Adam was hired as their new winemaker. I crafted his biography, and discovered a former officer/gentleman that had segued into the wine world. [In the military, officers have a lot of exposure to socializing at dinner parties where fine wine is served.] Something awoke inside of Adam, and he never looked back.

Richardson received his winemaking degree from Charles Sturt University in New South Wales, Australia. He went on to become a member of winemaking teams for the following super-premium wineries: Rancho Zabaco, Anapamu Cellars, MacMurray Ranch, and Mirassou in CA. Prior to moving to the U.S. in 1998, Richardson worked for d’Arenberg, Oakridge Estate, Normans, and Miranda wineries in Australia.

Add to that his work at Concannon as their veteran Rhône-style specialist, and his own Australian brand called, A.T. Richardson Wines, Adam was the perfect candidate to lead Underdog Wine Merchants‘ new wine export company.

Underdog is a subsidiary of The Wine Group, the same company which also owns and operates Concannon… As a resource already on board, this uniquely qualified Richardson to be the best candidate to work with the global companies within the Underdog Wine Merchants portfolio.

In this international capacity, Adam travels to and produces wines from almost every major wine appellation around the world, guiding all teams with what he knows will work best for each label being produced. More importantly, beneath all these qualifications is a personality that’s bright, vibrant, and optimistically energetic. I can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t enjoy being in his company.

As with all things, you have to wonder which came first… Is he slender because he’s always on the run, or was he always slender which equals a busy person who never packs it on? I think it’s the latter, because even on the road with him he was up and out the door, running down the streets of Fort Worth, St. Louis, and Chicago even before getting a road map to any of these cities. He’s brave, a natural born leader, and very much the innovator.

It’s so easy to get wrapped up in his Aussie charm and his passions, because he’s so driven by what he’s doing. Adam Richardson’s an extraordinary personality within the wine business… A brilliantly shining star among the best and brightest.
