Melanie's Wine Reviews

Melanie’s Wednesday Wines ~ August 15, 2007

Flowers, 2004 Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast – Camp Meeting Ridge | Estate Bottled ~ The name of the winery is fitting; the bouquet of this pinot is of field flowers and honeysuckle, added hints of leather in the back end of the nose. Lots and lots of strawberry jam in this easy lightly structured wine, subtle sweet cream rounds out the nose. Palate exhibits more strawberry and distinct cranberry-orange flavors. Enjoyably subtle anise and blackberry in the finish.$50.00

Williams Selyem, 2004 Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley – Rochioli Riverblock Vineyard ~ Absolutely stunning raspberry cream nose, so beautiful you want to dab a bit on the nape of your neck for perfume. Aromas of clove spice and a little horse saddle. More raspberry jam on the velvety palate with a touch of white pepper in the finish. Long and lingering with added hints of cocoa powder. Well balanced and good structure. $72.00

Williams Selyem, 2004 Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley – Westside Neighbors ~ Deep complex nose of blueberry and wisps of amber. Intense bouquet. Bright acid mid-palate with a fresh cherry tang. Vanilla creme flavors in the easy finish. Reminds me of warm fruit crisp with vanilla bean ice cream, that comforting flavor of Autumn. $62.00

Williams Selyem, 2005 Zinfandel, Russian River Valley – Feeney Vineyard ~ Late harvest plumy nature in the bouquet with added cinnamon spice. Dark chocolate and licorice round out the aromas in the nose. A hint of residual sugar on the tongue, this fruit bomb can stand up to it though, without seeming sweet. Blackberry jam, front, middle and all the way to the toasty oak finish. Wonderfully smooth wine for being 14.9 alc. Wow! $45.00

Williams Selyem, 2005 Zinfandel, Russian River Valley – Bacigalupi Vineyard ~ Aromas of blueberry jam and black pepper lead way to a slight yeasty nature. Tasty soft lip smacking palate. Raspberry kicking fruit with a good dose of spice that you expect from zin. Lingering silky finish. $45.00

Ridge Vineyards, 2005 Zinfandel, Lytton Springs ~ This wine is really great! Amazing nose; holy fresh berry fruit. Toasty oak exhibits Madagascar vanilla bean aromas, and loads of raspberry jam. Oh man, this wine is like silk as it hits your palate. A certain chocolaty characteristic envelopes your sense right as the wine hits your lips. Super tasty all the way through with lingering jam and hints of peppermint mid-palate. Excellent tannin structure that holds on. $33.00
